We jammed in more amazing attractions (like adult Disneyland) before packing up to fly home.
Piazza Navona and some cool areas right around it
We fell into back roads near Piazza Navona with music, bars, and restaurants. We went back twice!
Who would have thought we would find Cuban musicians in the streets of Rome near Piazza Navona? We were dancing in the street!
The Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel at Sunset
We pre-booked a “Happy Hour at the Vatican,” and there were fewer tourists. No photos were allowed inside the Sistine Chapel, but it was gorgeous.
Morning Tour of St. Peter’s Basilica
We were fortunate to find this since tours close at 12:30 pm on Saturday and all-day Sunday for services. We had an excellent tour guide who was a walking encyclopedia, and she had a musical way of speaking. We climbed the dome and had unlimited time inside the Basilica.
Museo di Castel Sant’Angelo
We were intrigued by a huge castle-like structure close to our Airbnb. While it doesn’t appear as one of the top sites to see in Rome, it should be! It was the papal castle for 1,000 years. A viaduct from the Vatican let the popes scurry here in times of crisis. It was then used as a prison. Executions were performed in the small inner courtyard. We witnessed more great views of Rome while seeing the still-existing secret passages and tiny prison cells.
We ended our last night in Italy by inhaling a delicious pizza. We contemplated ordering a second one and decided not to. I think Mathis was hoping I would not eat as much as I did.
Awesome! Great to see you had so much time to explore the Vatican Museums and Basilica! I would have ordered the second pizza. haha 😉
And (more) Kodak memories too!
What history! What joy! Love it!
